In 1918, seven years after Gustav Mahler's death, composer Arnold Schoenberg was concerned that modern music was not being performed with sufficient frequency and with proper rehearsal to permit listeners to achieve an appreciation and precise knowledge of new music. To remedy this deficiency, Schoenberg formed the Society for Private Musical Performances, presenting 154 works by 42 contemporary composers, all in arrangements for a few instruments. For the purpose of these private concerts, Schoenberg and his student Erwin Stein made chamber music arrangements of Gustav Mahler's Symphony No. 4, Lieder eines fahrenden Gesellen (Songs of a Wayfarer) and DasLied von der Erde (The Song of the Earth).
